I have learned that styling a home or apartment is a work in progress. I tend to be the type of person that wants stuff done ASAP once I have the idea. Well, I’ve had to become a bit more patient as I’ve realized good things truly do take time - oh, and money. I’ve been trying to find things that are unique and tell a story, rather than just filling space with stuff. I really like a minimalist look with pieces that are both old and new. I’ve been trying to incorporate homemade projects with modern elements to create something that feels like me, (and Dyl … LOL). Don’t worry- I run everything by him and he is on the same page ;) In this post I’m going to list 5 affordable decor ideas that I have incorporated in our apartment. I will link what I can at the end!
Real & faux plants — plants add so much to a space. They create a lively feeling - whether they are real or not. They are a very affordable, minimalistic addition to any corner, table or shelf and look classic and timeless. For my centerpiece on our dining table I have real eucalyptus which has dried on its own and lasted me MONTHS. This whole bouqet was $2.99 from trader joes (they have the best florals and small plants). I think the trick to allowing it to dry without getting brown is not putting it in water from the very start. I never watered this bouquet and it has held up perfectly! I love the pop of green against my white walls. For faux plants I love these small ones from Ikea. They are affordable, look decently real and are a perfect addition for small spaces. I have one on my shelves in the bathroom, in my glass kitchen cabinet and in our guest/TV room.
Books — I really love to decorate with books. They are perfect for adding height to a space, a pop of color or just some texture. I have books all over my apartment, most are novels that I have read but I also have found some great coffee table books. The thing with fancy coffee table books is that they are typically overpriced and all you’re using it for is its pretty spine - kinda ridiculous right? So I decided to look on Amazon under used books and I’ve hit the jackpot. I found beautiful books for $2.99-$12 in great condition. They don’t need to be perfect just to sit on a shelf! I love this little hack.
Homemade pottery — I am lucky enough to have some really talented people in my family. My grandma is an amazing artist and makes pottery and ceramics. I have a few of her pieces around and hope to collect more from her as they tell a story and have such great sentimental value. I love the look of her unique ceramics in a modern space; they are great conversation pieces!

DIY art — these projects are unfinished at the moment but I had to include them in the post because I’m loving how they turned out so far! I’ve been experimenting with paint and materials from old projects trying to make some art for our very bare walls. I’ve painted over 2 old canvases that I had no plans to use- I was very inspired by @southern.modern and @somewherelately - they both have highlights on DIY art with lots of ideas, I followed their tutorials! Both pieces still need to be framed and hung but things take time - especially during a pandemic, meh. I also drew some line figures for the bathroom shelves and just for fun - turns out butts are pretty easy to draw, haha.
Hats as wall decor — I love hanging my hats on the wall- it doubles as functional storage and beautiful decor. I think they look so chic and they keep their shape perfectly. This picture is from my old room, I haven’t decided where to hang my hats in the apartment yet… stay tuned!
